Introduction. Factors that initiate the autoimmune process of Hashimoto disease (HT) are still unclear, but endogenous and exogenous factors are considered to be important in the occurrence of autoimmune thyroid disease. The main treatment for hypothyroidism is oral L-thyroxine replacement. However the diet and suplementation may be important in the treatment of autoimmune thyroid disease. A dietary restriction of gluten can lead to decrease in the level of TSH and reduced inflammation process. Aim. The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and gluten free diet in patients with Hashimoto’s disease. Material and methods. The study was conducted among among patients suffering from HT all over the country in the form of a survey. The study included 156 people with HT in 2016. Results. The study demonstrated that the most of patients with Hashimoto’s disease are practicing the gluten – free diet, resulting in recovery. Additionally, studies have shown the pharmacological treatment and the gluten – free diet can reduce levels of TSH to normal values.
