Biopsychosocial problems experienced by women at reproductive age suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome

Introduction. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy in women at puberty and reproductive age. Aim. Analysis of the problems occuring in women at reproductive age with PCOS from the biopsychosocial perspective. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 113 patients hospitalized due to the affliction at the department of Gynecological Endocrinology in Independent Public Central Clinical Hospital in Katowice. Method of diagnostic survey was used, with a questionnaire of his own design as the research tool. Results. In the vast majority of women in the tested group numerous physical problems were observed (overweight and obesity, irregular menstrual periods, hirsutism, hair loss, skin problems, infertility, endocrine disorders, disorders of carbohydrate metabolism), which result in a range of psychosocial problems. The experience of unsuccessful trying to get pregnant as well as depressive states and low self-esteem induced by the disease symptoms have a significant negatively impact on mental health of women with PCOS. Conclusions. Women suffering from PCOS feel the multi-dimensionality of the problems associated with it, involving physical, psychological and social consequences.
