Introduction. The sense of health locus of control, which determines the sources of influence on one’s state of health, is of great significance in modifying health-related behaviour.
Aim. A comparison of the health locus of control in a group of healthcare professionals and in a group of people working in non-medical professions, as well as the evaluation of its influence on the level of declared health behaviour.
Material and methods. The research was carried out among 598 professionally active adults – healthcare professionals (group M) and people working in non-medical professions (group P). The research method was a diagnostic survey with the use of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC), version B,and alsowith the use of the Health-Related Behaviour Inventory (HBI).
Results. In both studied groups, M and P, the internal locus of control reached the highest level. People from group M displayed a substantially higher level of declared health behaviour (p < 0.05). The health locus of control in the category of external influence correlates positively with the overall evaluation of health behaviour in both groups (p < 0.05). In addition, group P also displayed a positive correlation with the internal locus of control p < 0.001).
Conclusions. The health locus of control constitutes a crucial factor in the health-promoting behaviour of professionally active people, irrespective of the kind of work they do.
