Effectiveness of selected physiotherapeutic methods in therapy of chronic nonspecific neck pain

Introduction. Chronic nonspecific back pain syndrome is a continually growing medical and social problem. Treatment contains the general physiotherapy, including the therapeutic massage, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and the sollux lamp. Aim. The evaluation of the effectiveness of these therapeutic methods in the chronic nonspecific neck pain syndrome. Material and methods. 74 patients with confirmed chronic neck pain were qualified to the research. The average age of patients was about 54.5 ± 12 years old. The surveyed people, were divided in two groups. Patients in the first group were treated with the therapeutic massage, whereas the second group received the TENS connected with sollux lamp. The patients had to fill in the questionnaire at the beginning and in the end of the therapy. In the research there were used subjective VAS scale to estimate level of pain, Laitinen scale for checking intensity and frequency of pain and Oswestry scale for evaluating neck disability. Furthermore range of motion in cervical spine was checked according to Zembaty guidelines. Results. The results confirmed that both methods were effective. Pain reduction and improvement of functional abilities were observed in both groups of patients. Range of motion in cervical spine significantly increased after using both therapeutic treatment. Conclusions. The applied physiotherapeutic methods occurred to be effective in rehabilitation of patients with the chronic neck pain. Any noticeable statistical differences in their therapeutic effectiveness were not found.
