Introduction. Obesity along with depressive disorders are the most common diseases of affluence. The coexistence of depressive-anxiety disorders with the obesity disturbs the process of body mass reduction. Aim. To assess depression and anxiety levels and relationship between the studied variables and body mass index (BMI) and socio-demographic factors in Obesity Clinic patients. Material. The study included 82 patients (79.3% females and 20.7% males). The mean age was 51.7 (SD = 12.2; range: 24–69 years). The mean body mass index (BMI) was 35.6 (SD = 5.53; range: 25–54.4). Methods. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used. Results. In the studied group of patients 67.1% (55 persons) got the number of points pointing at increased level of anxiety and/or depression. The increased level of anxiety was observed in 41.5% (34) persons, 15 persons (18.3%) demonstrated the pathological level of anxiety. The increased level of depression was noted in 25.6% (21 persons), the pathological level of depressive symptoms appeared in 11% (9 persons). Among 9 patients with pathological level of depression 7 patients (77.8%) also reported pathological anxiety. No significant relationship was noted between the levels of depression and anxiety and BMI, sex, education level and marital status. Conclusions. 1. Increased levels of depression or/and anxiety turned out to be common in the group of examined patients. 2. The levels of depression and anxiety was not related to socio-demographic variables and BMI. 3. The psychological diagnosis and therapy and in some cases psychiatric intervention should be important components of treatment of overweight and obesity.
