Reports of Główny Urząd Statystyczny (Central Statistical Office) and Rządowa Rada Ludnościowa (the Government Population Council) alert that age of women trying to conceive their first child is systematically growing, however, fertility problems are beginning to affect younger females. Infertility and its treatment are ones of the fastest developing areas of gynecology. Modern clinics which specialise in fertility treatment process are emerging. These clinics provide access to modern equipment and procedures that help to make the dream of having children come true. A couple that goes to a clinic for infertility treatment is being tested in many various ways in order to determine the factor which causes irregularities in procreation. A midwife is the first member of the medical staff that patients meet in the clinic. The midwife's professionalism reflected, among other things, in a correctly taken medical and obstetric history, supported by a proper diagnostic tests, very often enables to determine a cause of problems. In many cases those can be treated without the use of the assisted reproductive technology (ART). Unfortunately, statisticians state that approximately 24 000 couples must be treated with the ART therapy. Maternity care should be conducted holistically, because the treatment affects the human biological sphere, mental state and social relations. Data from surveys conducted in fertility treatment resorts indicates that patients who have been treated with psychotherapy in the right time, have better chances of a successful treatment and well-being. Considering that supervision over couples doesn’t end with the conception, skilfully-lead conversation with the patient creates an atmosphere of trust and support. The midwife who is responsible for the pregnancy after failures with fertilization should remember that this situation is highly stressful and requires the commitment of the both sides.

Key words: gynecology, infertility, midwife, maternity care, psychotherapy.
