The global epidemic of obesity affects both adults and children, and includes not only the developed countries but also the developing ones. In most cases, it is a result of an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, based on the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Understanding causes of obesity involves identifying the processes conducive to excessive weight gain in different periods of life. The paper presents an overview of the current state of knowledge in the field of intrauterine and family environment factors that promote obesity at an early stage of development.

Key words: obesity, children, environment.
