Lectures are the oldest form of transmission of knowledge. However, nowadays with a facilitated access to information the traditional forms of lecturing and their validity are often questioned. It is believed that interactive forms like labs, seminaries or discussion sessions are not only more attractive, but also more effective in terms of gaining knowledge. At the same time the development of modern technologies makes the long-distance forms of transmission of knowledge more and more popular, which is also visible in medical education. This allows students to have unlimited access to educational materials as well as to reduce the costs of giving lectures and focus more attention on students in the process of education. On the other hand, the long-distance forms of transmission of knowledge reduce the student’s face-to-face contact with the lecturer and other students and are highly dependent on the students’ self-discipline. Although some authors believe that this method is inadequate to medical education, it turns out that using hybrid methods seems valuable and allows the curriculum to be effectively completed.

Key words: e-learning, blended learning, medical education, distance learning.
