Utility of EQ-5D health states evaluated with the use of direct methods of assessment by 5th year pharmacy students of Wroclaw Medical University. Polski Przegląd Nauk o Zdrowiu. 2015;3(44):170–176.

Introduction. EQ-5D is a quality of life generic questionnaire most widely used in Europe. It describes 243 health states and includes 5 dimensions, such as: mobility, self‑care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of EQ-5D health states using direct methods of preferences’ measurement and to compare this evaluation done by medical students and by general population. Material and methods. 135 students of the 5th year of pharmacy of the Wroclaw Medical University took part in the questionnaire survey. In each task, students assessed randomly selected 5 out 243 health states. Direct preferences measurement methods such as VAS, TTO and SG were used. Students determined how good or bad was a patient’s condition. Results. We obtained 664 useable valuations. No health state has been valued as worse than death. Appropriate additive models have been built: for VAS (all coefficients significant, R2 equal to 0.488, and the worst possible health state valued as 0.089), for TTO (all coefficients statistically significant except for constant and UA2, R2 equal to 0.292, and the worst possible health state valued as 0.540) and for SG (all coefficients significant except for constant and AD2, R2 equal to 0.196, and the worst possible health state valued as 0.582). With the use of TTO, almost all health states were valuated higher by the pharmacy students compared to general population. Conclusions. The results of utility assessment were different for each method used. Pharmacy students have a tendency to value EQ-5D health states higher than the general population.

Key words: EQ-5D, TTO, utility.
