Introduction. In recent years, a healthy lifestyle, often referred to as "fit", has gained a lot of popularity. It should be based primarily on a healthy, balanced, rational diet and regular physical activity. Especially amateur athletes often make their own supplementation plan, not paying attention to the possible risks associated with long and excessive consumption. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to estimate the scale, motives and preferences in the use of dietary supplements in men undertaking recreational strength training in Szczecin. Material and methods. The study involved 35 men aged 18-35, practicing amateur strength training, living in the city of Szczecin and the surrounding area. The study was conducted using a survey method. The author's questionnaire collected information on supplementation, physical activity and subjective assessment of nutritional knowledge. Statistical analysis (Chi test – square, Spearman rank correlation coefficients) was performed in the StatisticaPL12 program. Results. Among the surveyed men, 83% used supplements and the same proportion believed that they are safe for health. High protein nutrients were consumed by the most respondents – 74%, carbohydrate supplements – 49%, meal replacement products (MRP) and vitamin and mineral preparations were used by the same percentage of men – 49% each. Anabolics and anti-catabolic drugs (HMB, creatine) were used by 23% of respondents. The same percentage of respondents received thermogenics and fat burners. Surveyed men declared taking more than one supplement at the same time. The main goal for taking supplementation was improving performance (63%) and supplementing the diet (46%). As many as 37% of respondents used supplementation because it is popular. There were no statistically significant correlations between the age of men and the type of supplements used. Conclusions. The study showed a strong need to disseminate the educational program on nutrition and supplements among amateur bodybuilders.

Key words: dietary supplements, amateur bodybuilders, physical activity.
