Introduction. Medical databases (MD) are collections of information that are aimed to facilitate the access to reliable medical data in accordance with EBM. A properly prepared database can have different forms – from simple bases of patients to semantic databases aimed to particular diseases (reference databases), that enhance optimization of medical stuff. Databases in computer versions include data from basic and extended medical interviews, the course of treatment, results of ambulatory and laboratory tests. Databases support the diagnostic process and selection of treatment methods of i.e. schizophrenia which in Europe constitutes a half of all people suffering from psychotic diseases. To select proper treatment methods a full information from both direct interviews and databases (from databases of patients to scientific databases like MedLine, Embase) is required. Aim. The aim of the study was to establish the level of familiarity with and frequency of using of medical databases – both scientific and of patients, for treatment of people suffering from psychical diseases on an example of schizophrenia in Poland. Material and methods. The study was conducted among doctors and psychologists who deal with the treatment of schizophrenia. The tool used in a study was a questionnaire spread in the years 2012–2013 in all country. A total number of 245 people partook in a study. Results. Databases allow a fast and effective diagnosis and an optimal treatment of schizophrenia according to standards of EBM. The most popular database proved to be MedLine, and MD are more frequently used by Polish medical centres.

Key words: medical database, schizophrenia, treatment standards.
