Introduction. As a result of the loss of ovarian function, occurring during menopause, decrease of estrogen level leads to many undesirable effects such as vaginal atrophy, decrease in bone density, adverse lipid changes and clotting disorders, decreased libido, sleep disturbances, hot flashes, irritability and mood disorders. Estrogen therapy is the most effective method of treatment of menopause symptoms, especially hot flashes. Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze factors that significantly influence the decision to start HRT, including cost analysis of the therapy. Material and methods. Results. There is a large selection of HRT drugs in Polish pharmacies. Yearly costs of therapy vary widely. We observed even five‑fold yearly difference costs of treatment between medications. Chemical substances included in particular medicinal products and drugs form influence the prices of particular medicines. Conclusions. Accurate analysis of possible benefits and hazards is required in decision‑making about hormone replacement therapy. In decision‑making process economic status of a patient is equally important.
