A purpose of this study was a quantitative evaluation of diner sets served by a school canteen. The research was conducted in a school canteen in Legnica. Four ten‑day menus planned for four seasons were analysed. The menus were displayed in front of the canteen with a detailed list of products and their weight. The dinners evaluated consisted of two dishes – the soup and main course. For the purpose of the calculations it was assumed that the dinner should provide 35% of the daily demand. Pupils of grades 1–6, aged 7–12 years use the canteen. On the basis of the conducted research it was stated that the meals served by the school canteen had been incompatible with the principles of rational feeding. It was presented that the energy value of the dinner sets, regardless the season, did not provide the recommended energy required by the particular groups of the population (children 7–9 year‑old, at the age 10–12 years. In the dinner sets from the particular seasons a high content of protein, carbohydrates and dietary fibre was determined. All sets and in all seasons did not have enough amount of fat. The percentage share of nutrients in the evaluated dinner sets was proper with regard to protein only in the autumn. An excessive amount of carbohydrates and insufficient supply of fats took place in each of the analysed seasons.

Key words: children of primary school age, primary school, a school canteen, dietary habits.
