In recent years it has been evident that function of active vitamin D forms is pleiotropic and goes well beyond the regulation of calcium homeostasis in the body and maintenance of bones in good condition. In this review, current literature data concerning the role of vitamin D in various autoimmunological (Hashimoto and Crohn’s disease), cardiovascular and skin (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo) diseases has been presented.

Key words: vitamin D, calcitriol, vitamin D supplementation, pleiotropic action of vitamin D.
